My Three Goals for 2013.

January 20, 2013 by Sharyn Watson

I’m taking a page from my fellow Success Freaks team members this year. Instead of making New Year’s Resolutions, I decided to go with Goals. Now, I have way more than three Goals for 2013, but I can’t put them all here (Well, I could, but I won’t), so I decided to go with just the top three. Want me to share?
Might as well say “yes”, because Imma gonna anyway.

This month you get my ramblings about one of them.

Goal #1
Learn more!
This is important to me. I am constantly reading, researching, and trying all sorts of new things. It keeps my mind open to new ideas and concepts. It makes me feel more accomplished. And… it teaches me so much about life, other people, and myself. But wait, I don’t just want to learn about things that will help me in my work… Oh no, no, no. I want to learn about other places, other cultures…other ideals. I want to feel like a World Traveler even if I never step foot out of the US. Don’t get me wrong, I do want to become a World Traveler, but that’s a Goal for another day.

I’ve recently started watching The West Wing on Netflix.
I love Netflix with its’ lack of commercials and full seasons to watch.
When the series was running on tv, I didn’t care to watch it. I thought it was all about politics. I’m really not a political gal and figured I’d be bored with it, so I never gave it a chance. You’re probably thinking that now that I’ve started “enjoying” it I feel pretty stupid for not watching in the first place. You’d be wrong, but I get that you would think that. I just think the timing was off. The lessons I’m learning from the show now would have been lost on me had I watched it as a series way back when. Although I am kinda learning about the inner workings of the White House (I’m sure some of the content is correct), I’m learning more about human nature than anything. How people interact, that everyone makes mistakes, how to handle disappointment in yourself and others, how to succeed… and that it’s really okay to get close to people you work with. All are really good things to learn and know.

Obviously, I don’t plan to get all of my education from television. I’ve always been an avid reader and plan to continue reading everything I possibly can, but nowadays I’m more prone to pick up a biography, self-help book, or even a tutorial or two to help me with my work. That’s not to say I won’t enjoy the occasional comic book (yes, I do read them) and the latest “best seller”, I just plan to broaden my selection and interests.

So…that’s Goal #1. And…this is ME daring YOU to share YOUR goals with us on our Success Freaks facebook page.

See you next month for Goal #2.

Love and laughter to all…

SUCCESS FREAKS – #80 – DORKS RISING – GUEST STARRING: KEVIN MICKELSON

January 17, 2013 by Success Freaks

Kevin Mickelson knew he wanted to be an author from a young age, but kept putting it off because it didn’t seem realistic. When he finally decided that realism wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, he put a sample of his work together and contacted Zombie Orpheus Entertainment to see if they could use a freelance writer to pen a new adventure module based on their hit independent film, “The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising.”

They liked what they saw, and his effort resulted in a chance to form friendships with some of his favorite independent film stars, as well as a high-profile freelance gig that put his name on the radar! His wheel-spinning days behind him, he’s now devoting his energy toward pushing his dream ever further and working to bring a piece of the larger gaming world to his home town of Duluth, Minnesota.

Welcome to the #1 “Here There Be Geeks” Comedic Motivational Show…otherwise known as “Success Freaks”.  Tonight Mordant & McFall chat it up with their special guest, Kevin Mickelson, also known as “Gamemaster’s Kip”.  Geeks and dreamcatchers alike will love this show as Kevin takes us from his humble gamer beginnings, the influence of one of Mordant’s vlogs, which gave him the courage to step out of his comfort zone, and onward to his successful journey as a freelance writer… following his passion to success.

Look for Kevin’s new kickstarter project soon: Berserkon

To all who dare to try,

January 15, 2013 by Charles McFall

They say home is where the heart is; wherever I may roam where I lay my head is home; home – where my music’s played, home – where my love lies waiting silently for me; and of course where we tell mama I’m heading. Yeah, I am a bit of a music nut sometimes – if you don’t get the references, Google it.

For most I suppose home is family, where you grew up, and to where you return. And yet for most of us, where we are is not where we live. We stay in a place of perpetual stress, death grips on what we hold most dear and no real hope or vision of change. Except that is only a limited perception of where we are. I hope to show you this month how I transitioned from that state of being, I call it a “broke (as in no money) mentality,” to where I am now – of living in the excitement of seeing “the dream” draw more into reality.

First let’s be clear about the “broke mentality.” Where we are in this area of life is we have managed to attract some value into our lives. In a recent speech I gave, I had a volunteer stand up, had her hold a doll representing a husband, then a few cookie monster toys to be the kids, a vacuum to represent maintaining a home (no I wasn’t being sexist – I actually planned to grab a male volunteer), money, and car keys. As you can imagine her hands were very full and her instructions were to hold on tight and don’t let go. Then I pulled a cell phone out of my pocket and said “life is calling – catch.” The crowd reaction was awesome as I tossed the phone through the air at her and unfortunately for me she caught it without dropping anything. My intention was to show that as we have a death grip on what little value we have now, we have no room to grow. And, when life throws us a curveball, everything falls apart.

I went on to explain that the reason we as humans fail to reach the goals we set is because we are trying to arbitrarily add to the pile of things we are death gripping – yeah I just made that a verb yo! When we live like this, we are always pulled in too many directions, never feeling valued or satisfied, constantly worried about losing what little we have, and are always saying no. As I saw the heads in the room nodding in agreement, I knew it was time to explain where we really live.

All of us have a passion inside. We have something in our lives that attracts us above and beyond anything else. For some it’s sports, the kids, the vehicles, but for me it’s communicating & helping others be awesome. This is where we truly live no matter what we hold dear. I have made many a bad decision to ignore my wife because I lost track of time talking with someone and helping them. I have also tried to stifle this love and only pay attention to her (and the family later in life) only to be miserable and to make her so as well. The balance I had to find was to always communicate and help others. I couldn’t put it all into work, the show, or friends and not be able to do it the same or more in my “home.” Once I gave the same energy and effort into my “home” – basically lived it with my wife, family, and myself – everything changed.

Over the last five years I have slowly but surely refined how I utilize my passion. I started off doing a small podcast that grew into a community of shows and hosts. At the same time I learned lessons on how to use that passion to better my marriage and be a better father. You see, the general mistake I was making – and I feel most people make – is that I sent my talents one way. That was out over the airwaves, and that made my wife feel left out and ignored. I realized that to truly follow my heart I needed to live it – and that is where home is. I had to realize that I was “doing” a show that competed with my attention for my wife, my kids, and my work. I couldn’t ignore the internal conflicts anymore. Through the year of 2012 I struggled with this concept – the ultimate resolution being I had to let go of something good in order to get something better. By letting go of the Bear Crawling Nation and a few other things not only willingly, but also happily, I did more than free myself up to chase my dream. I discovered that once I stopped “doing” and started living, things like “spending money on a stupid hobby” changed to ways & means appearing to us (my wife and I), allowing me to do things that could never have been done before.

I just returned from the New Media Expo which was an impossibility. Not only was it costly for a “hobby” I knew it would never fly with the wife. Yet she ended up being the one pushing me to go, finding ways to make it happen, and ultimately forcing me into the reality of what happens when you live your passion.

Before May of 2012 I was holding tight to the outlets I had built for my passion while trying to hold tight to the family, work, etc. That was a recipe for disaster, and little disasters came often enough. But, through first living the passion at home, my whole world opened up. So, I hope you see that where you are right now isn’t where you really live. We all want to feel relaxed, stress free, and to say yes more than no. What we have to do is live what we want in order to achieve it. As my wife and I say now “when it’s right we say yes. Then we allow the universe and God to bring it to us.”

Home for me is my passion. It’s not a place, or even a set of people. Home is where I come alive, shine like a rock star, and truly gain join by giving to others. As I now live everyday out of my love of communication & “helping others be awesome,” my life changed seemingly overnight at NMX. I could go on and on with the details of my adventures, the deeper meanings of what happened there, and how for me it was truly a dream come to life. And truly, I set out to write this article based out of what I experienced there. But really, there is only one phrase that can sum up what the New Media Expo means to me:

Welcome Home.

Success Freaks #79 – Mordant & McFall’s Excellent Adventures at NMX

January 15, 2013 by Success Freaks

“Ted: Bill, I think they want us to say something.

  Bill: What should I say?

    Ted: [shrugs] Make something up.

Bill: Be excellent to each other.

        [room murmurs appreciatively]

          Ted: Party on, dudes!

            ~from the movie: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure~

In this episode our #1 late-Night “BlogWorld, Baby!” Motivational talk-radio show hosts (whew!) come to you, once again, from The Entertainment Capital of the World…Las Vegas, Nevada!  As New Media Expo (formerly BlogWorld) is in the middle of breaking down exhibits and the NMXLive! Conference comes to an end, for 2013, Mordant & McFall are hosting their second radio show in two days.

Joined by The Real PodVader himself (Jay Soderberg), the boys give us a recap of the “Excellent Adventure” they have been on for the past three…no, make that four…days.  Many new friends have been made, lots of knowledge has been passed down, business alliances have been formed, and PodCasting Royalty has been touched by the Success Freaks invasion!  The phrase “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” was tested as McFall regaled us with his “nightclub memories” and the unveiling of THE pen (my precious).

Among the many wonderful souls that were touched on in this show, we offer a huge “Thanks” to the following people (see the Highlights) who gave us guidance, reached out to make us welcome, offered support, and just were an absolute joy to meet as Success Freaks (formerly known as “The Other Side of LIVE!”) stormed the NMX/Blogworld castle.

Party on, Dudes!

SUCCESS FREAKS #78 – Bushwhacking Success – Winning Through Persistence Against All Odds

January 10, 2013 by Success Freaks

Broadcasting LIVE from Las Vegas at the NMX Conference, baby! This “Special” episode of  Success Freaks finds the #1 Late-Night “New Media Expo” Motivational Show hosts, Mordant and McFall, in the middle of one of the most exciting, and nerve-wracking, times of their lives as they share their adventures in “Bushwhacking Success “ …or finding that “back door” (just like a Victory Ninja) in to where you want to be.

Today our Success Freaks podcasting duo enthusiastically discuss the trials and tribulations encountered on their path to becoming professional speakers, the road to NMX, as well as the lessons learned along the way, and how they use these experiences as they move forward. With a little help from a list of people that reads like the Who’s Who of NMX and/or podcasting Royalty, this hour is lively, fun, and a lesson in itself.

The race you’re running, the one that levels up your life enough to achieve your goals and change your world — it’s a race your run against yourself … and it’s a marathon — not a sprint.  Persistence is the key to Bushwhacking success.  Too many people quit, thinking they’re way off the mark, not realizing they’re just 10 feet from the gold.  You’ve got to plan your strategy, lie in wait, and then move when the opportunity presents itself.  If you really want to do something, sometimes you have to actually create it yourself!  This can be said for almost everything you do.

TOSOL/Success Freaks #77 – Your 2013

January 3, 2013 by Success Freaks

This is YOUR 2013!  Work towards Goals…don’t make resolutions.

When most people make their New Year’s Resolutions, they are setting themselves up to fail from the very beginning.  So, set positive Goals instead of Resolutions and work towards them.

What Goals have you planned for 2013? We’re not talking about “Resolutions” here we’re talking actual Goals.  Have you set Goals you want to achieve?  Have you written them down?  Have you set actionable (baby) steps to help you achieve your Goals?  Do you have plans to keep a record of your daily, weekly, and/or monthly steps?

In this Episode our New Year’s Day Motivational hosts, Mordant & McFall, take us on a trip down memory lane as we remember how much The Other Side of LIVE! has evolved since the beginning of 2012.  It’s been a year of transition, growth and coming of age as motivational speakers, talk radio show hosts, and individuals.  Plans are being formulated for the TOSOL/Success Freaks radio show, and business, for 2013 as the show becomes “Success Freaks”, The Success Freaks System is created, the Success Freaks Conference comes to life in June 2013, and everyone on the Success Freaks team is gearing up for a Bigger, Badder, Better fun-filled future.  Goals are being set, steps are being made to reach those Goals, and, in 2013, Success Freaks will be the most exciting ride in the amusement park.  We invite everyone to join us on this ride.

“All we can ever do as human beings is react out of where we live.” ~Charles McFall~

How Bad Do You Want It!? ~Part the Second~

December 31, 2012 by R. Mordant Mahon

The Following is the second half of a very long blarticle.  The first half can be found at:

http://www.mordantworld.com/how-bad-do-you-want-it-part-the-first.html.  If you haven’t already done it, I suggest you read “How Bad Do You Want It!?  ~Part the First~” first.  Enjoy!

First things first—decide on, then commit to, this “It” that you want.  I’m sure you already know what it is.  It’s been swimming around in the deep-end of your brain for quite a while now.  If you’re not sure, then ask yourself this question:  if you could Be, Do, Have anything you want….  If you had all the talent, looks, money, smarts, chutzpah—if you had whatever it took and you knew you would be a big success, what would you be?  Answer that and you have your dream, that thing you are truly passionate about, set out in front of you.  Now you know.  And, now it’s time to commit (that’s right—the “C” word) to doing something about it.  Now it’s time to turn your dream into a goal.

This is where your fantasy becomes a reality.

Next, you will begin researching, then plotting out the steps that will take you on this collision course with your future.  Remember, a dream without specific attainable steps is just that—a dream.  It’s those action steps that turn your wanna-be fantasy into something real—a goal.  That’s what is going to take you to the next level.

So, first you set your beacon, your goal, the destination on your dream-catching map.  Then, research what it’s going to take to get you to where you want to go…or at least the next step.  You can also try starting from your goal, then working your way backward, laying out each of the steps until you arrive at today.  I.e., first you take your goal, before that you _(actionable step)_, before that you _(actionable step)_, and so on, leading all the way back to where you are now.  This is called “The Merlin Method.”

No matter how you do it, you’ll have your actionable steps leading to your now attainable goal.  Now there’s only one thing left for you to do, and that is really do it.  Take those steps, one at a time if necessary, more if possible.  But, no matter what, the only way you’re going to obtain your goal is if you DO YOUR STEPS.  If you’re able to move forward with no problem—smooth sailing.  If not, then you’ve probably got something blocking your way.  This will certainly give you the opportunity to shine a light on whatever may stand in the way of you achieving your goal(s).  Especially if that “thing” is Y-O-U.  (A hard pill, I know, but swallow it down and let’s move on.)

Now that you’ve decided to take a look at what is standing in your way, what are you going to do about it?  Basically, “how bad do you want it!?”  More than: TV, video games, time off from work, time out with your friends, Disneyland, Disney World, the big game, the Super Bowl, every must-see movie, books, blogs, Facebook, YouTube, _(your distraction here)_, the list is never-ending.  What are you willing to sacrifice so that your dream may become a reality?  If this really is your dream, you goal, your passion, then it shouldn’t be too difficult to drop everything else in pursuit of this one very important thing, right?

Yeah, you’d think that, wouldn’t you?

If that were the case, then people would be achieving their goals and attaining their dreams every day.  Hell, you’d be already halfway there yourself.  But, you’re not, are you?  Chances are if you’ve taken the time to read this far into this blarticle, then you’re looking for a little help in the whole in-pursuit-of-your-dreams area.  A lot of the problem is that we as people are not always that focused and we’re easily distracted.  At the end of an oh-so hard day, who wants to knock out a couple more hours in front to a computer, just to pursue something that may never come to fruition anyway?

Successful people, that’s who.

If you want to be successful at any level with this thing, this “It” you say you “want to be when you grow up,” then eventually you’re going to have to log in some serious time and effort.  But, for now, here at the beginning, I think you might begin with a couple to a few hours a week of trading your TV time in for something you keep saying is more important to you.

But, I don’t have enough time left in the week, you say.  I’m tired when I get home from work, you whine.  I don’t want to miss my television programs—don’t even get me started with this one!  Let’s look at it this way…how much time do you actually put in as you trek towards your goal?  If there’s 168 hours in a week (there are).  And, you take 56 out for sleep (provided you get eight hours of sleep every day of the week) and 40 hours for the J-O-B.  That leaves you with roughly 72 hours to devote to doing something dream dedicated.  That’s three full 24-hour days.  Do you think you might be able to squeeze in four to five hours for the week?  How about an hour or two a day?  One hour?  Do you think you could set aside one hour a day for working on becoming this thing you say you’d most want to be in life?

Does this put things in perspective for you?

So, we’re back to the original question, how bad do you want it!!  Do you really want to Do, Be, Have this incredible “It”?  Or are you going to sit back, relax, grab the clicker and continue watching your life pass you by as you rev the engine to 15 mph, burning out down that Mediocre Highway?  As always, the choice…the decision is up to you.  And, so is the fight.  You’re going to have to combat yourself of all people, slogging your way through your laziness, self-doubt, and lame limiting-belief system to get to a Bigger, Badder, Better, More level of your Life.  But…the fight is worth it.  It will change you, for the better—into the type of person you need to be to accomplish all you say you desire and Be, Do, Have the heretofore elusive “It.”  What do you say—wanna give it a go?  It’s not that hard once you get started.

Go ahead…show the world, and yourself, how bad you want it.

~R. Mordant Mahon~

TOSOL #76 – Two Guys, One Christmas

December 28, 2012 by Success Freaks

“The party’s on. The feelin’s here. That only comes. This time of year.  Simply having a wonderful Christmastime…” ~ Paul McCartney ~

While everyone else in the world is busy spending time with friends and family. While everyone else in the world is enjoying a little time off from their busy lives and celebrating Christmas the way, ya know, you should … our Motivational talk show Elves, Mordant & McFall, are doing the one thing that no one else on their team is doing.  They’re chatting…on the radio … with each other, and Gitmo Slave (from the No Agenda Stream), about what they’re doing with their Christmas Day.

The evening runs the gambit from favorite Christmas Movies that simply must be watched, reminiscing about favorite gifts received as children, favorite memories of time spent with family, and what annual rituals people go through during this time of year. Mordant, McFall and Gitmo take the time to share of themselves with their listeners on this Christmas Evening.

Talk turns to the NMX/blogworld conference coming up in January and what TOSOL/Success Freaks has to offer their faithful listeners/followers in 2013.  And just what does the coming year have in store for everyone, including Mordant & McFall?  Public Speaking engagements, touring the country, conferences,  online coaching, webinars, and even a rebranding of the company. “This year is the year we’re really going to stop talking and start doing.”  This will be the year of “Exciting” for everyone in the TOSOL/Success Freaks/No Agenda Stream world and you’re all invited along for the ride.

How Bad Do You Want It!? ~Part the First~

December 23, 2012 by R. Mordant Mahon

How badly do you want it?

Really, how bad?

By “it” I mean that dream you keep talking about.  That goal you keep putting off or never have enough time to pursue.  That special “it” you’ve waited forever to sink your teeth into, taking a firm bite out of the best this life could offer you.  How badly to you want to flying scissors kick it to the ground, hogtie it with rope you braided from your hopes & visions about your wanna-be life, and make it your bitch?

Really, how bad?

Bad enough to give up a little TV?  Or your favorite video game?  Or time with your friends?  How badly do you want this thing you say you want?  This pie-in-the-sky pipedream you know you’ll never do anything about, but you swear that you’ll get to it soon….  Tomorrow….  Someday.

Nike has a saying:

“Yesterday you said tomorrow.”

The problem is, as we all know, tomorrow never comes.  All you ever have is today.  Today to pay your bills.  Today to raise your kids.  Today to take that vacation.  Today to become a writer, an artist, a _(fill in the blank)_.  Today to Become.  They say Time is a thief.  But, so is apathy.  And, so is complacency.  If you do not stoke that fire burning in your belly, feed that desire yearning to create your destiny, then someday—maybe even tomorrow—you will suffer the “joy” of regret at never having accomplished, hell, maybe never even having attempted to Do, Be, Have that “It” you’ve always wanted.

Sucks, doesn’t it?

Believe me when I tell you that you are not alone.  Nope, not by a longshot.  I, too, suffer from the same affliction you do.  That’s right, sometimes life is so good enough that I don’t feel the need to push it further.  I mean, why would I?  I am comfortable right where I’m at.  I do have it pretty good after all.  Why would I push to go anywhere that might take me away from here?  Especially when it means I will have to cross over into that dark and foreboding place known as Outside My Comfort Zone.  Especially when it means I might have to work to get where I want to go and, most likely, work very hard at this thing I’m just a-playin’ with now.

Yuck!

Why?  Because what lies beyond this velvet trap is everything I say I want out of life.  Unless I’m just fooling myself, adventure and glory are there….  As well as self-respect and a deep sense of accomplishment.  Not altruistic enough for you?  How about the ability to better help others and teach them to help themselves?  Will that satisfy your yearning to make a difference in this world?  Whatever your personal “It” is, you’re going to have to do more than hope and dream, plot and plan to achieve it.

Because, despite expressions to the contrary, “It” doesn’t just happen.

So, what are you going to do about it?  What, in fact can you do about it?  You still only have the same amount of time you were stuck with at the beginning of this blarticle.  Less, actually.  Is there anything you can do to put yourself back on the fast track to achieving your dream?

Yes, of course there is.

First you have to realize that, not only can you do something, but it’s your responsibility.

What!?

You heard me.  Ultimately, it all falls on you—the success, the failure, the mediocrity of being stuck somewhere in the middle—that’s all on you, baby.  But, don’t worry; that’s the good news.

Again…what!?

No foolin’—this is the good part.  The fact that you are the person responsible for your situation in this life is a good thing.  In fact, it’s probably the best thing you’ve read thus far.

I know it’s the most important.

Once you take full responsibility for everything that’s going on, you begin to realize that you can effect a change.  You can make a difference in your own life.  Wouldn’t you rather have it that way, than to have to sit around and wait for some knight in shining armor to come to your rescue?  Well, guess what.  You’re your own knight in shining armor.  It’s up to you to come and save the day.

Daunting, huh?  Don’t worry; it gets better.

What does all this have to do with “how bad do you want it!?”  Everything.  It is up to you to motivate yourself beyond the dreaming stage.  You are the person who has to create goals, set achievable baby steps, begin moving forward and adjust as you go.  “How bad do you want it!?” means just that.  How much more than mere lip service are you willing to give in order to Be, Do, Have this “It” you say you want?

Time is the Dream Killer.

If you think you don’t have enough time to get everything you’d like to accomplish off the backburner and onto your plate, you’re absolutely right!

What!?

You heard me…you are correct-o-mundo.  There will never be enough time for you to write that book, get that doctorate, learn to play the guitar, pursue that singing career, become a big brother, see the world.  Never, never, never…and I mean NEVER!

Then, why bother?

Because it can be done, but you have to do it.  You have to create the necessary space in your life for those things you want to accomplish (or, at least, say you want to accomplish).  You’re going to have to shift things around.  You might even (not might, really—probably) have to get up early/stay up late in order to move forward, step by step, toward your goals.  There will be sacrifices.  Those self-same sacrifices I mentioned earlier in the blarticle.  This, specifically, is what “how bad do you want it!?” is referring to.  Do you want it more that your TV, your video games, your nights out with friends?  Are you worthy of these dreams you are laying claim to?  If not, then perhaps they’re not worthy of you.

Something to think about, isn’t it?
